Pretty Taos

Old truck in Taos.

When my daughter came to visit this past weekend, we took her and her significant other into town for a tour of the plaza. Then we were going to take them to a cute little restaurant that a friend of Richard's just opened in the Overland Sheepskin complex. It was closed, but the owner did give us a take out box of yummy samples from the desert case.

But the best part was this view of the mountains on the Pueblo land and this old truck. It is so Taos...a painting waiting to happen. Just perfect.

Practice painting.

I finished a watercolor painting I have been nursing along for a few weeks. Not exactly what I'm looking for, but good practice.

"Neighbors" watercolor 11 x 15

And then I tore the paper taking the tape off. I thought I was using watercolor paper tape. I guess not. I have to find some new tape, and get back to it!

I am eager to paint some of the Fall colors here in the San Luis Valley.

Cleaning up the roads

On my daily walks with my little mutt Cowboy, I have taken to picking up pieces of glass and metal I find in the road.

Junk

I am coming up with quite a collection of colored broken glass shards, and as I walk, my mind
begins to formulate ideas about what I can make out of it.

I wonder if I could make something on a bed of glass? Or maybe some kind of landscape mosaic?

Everyday I get materials for future art projects, I get to clean up the environment, and maybe even save a few tires in the process. Kind of like a reward for picking up the trash. Win -win!

Rio Costilla Studio Tour 2013

Today is the last day of the Rio Costilla Studio Tour. It runs from 10am - 5pm and involves a whole lot of local artists who open up their studios to the public this time every year.

We took the kids and wandered through downtown Jaroso yesterday, where we met many of our neighbors, who also happen to be artists on the tour. Nice work.

It's great to live in a creative community and the surrounding landscapes are a vision--inspiration for any artist.

Next year I hope to be a part of the Rio Costilla Studio Tour, but this year, if you want to check out some great art and meet some fabulous artists, hurry on over to the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico and support the local artists!

Arte de Descartes XIII

Arte de Descartes XIII

August 24 - September 7, 2013

Stables Gallery

133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte
Taos, NM

I currently have three pieces showing in the 13th annual Arte de Descartes show in Taos, New Mexico. This is my second year in this art show. This year my focus was on metal. I collected rusted metal scraps, wire, nuts, and bolts from the farm we are currently renting in Jaroso, Colorado, and pieced together 3 sculptures out of the discarded metal. I spray painted the pieces gold with a can of left over paint I found in the garage.

"Metal Head, Primal"

The idea behind this juried art show is for artists to create art out of recycled objects, or items that some people might consider trash - destined for the landfill. The Taos News did a great article on the show. Melissa Larson of Wholly Rags in Taos makes the Arte de Descartes an exciting, fun, and successful event every year, and I want to thank her and the judges for the opportunity to be a part of the show again this year.
